Most of us aren’t settled and passionate about our jobs until we’re in our 30s and 40s. Some never find a career they’re truly passionate about. Most likely because their lack of risk taking. Athletes on the other hand are very lucky (because they work hard and take risks) and fall in love with their jobs around age 10-12 and end up making a career out of it up until their mid 20s, 30s and some until they’re 40. The most common problem with this is almost all athletes will have to end up finding another career after sport and most struggle working in jobs they have no passion for. Because athletes only know how to work in jobs they’re passionate about, they’ve been doing it since they were 10. As a retired athlete, it’s so hard to find work you enjoy post-sport. The most common advice I give to athletes is to focus on learning and upskilling and being OK with doing work you don’t enjoy. There's a common theme I see with some athletes who have transitioned into the corporate sector in their first 1-3 years post sport. I'm going to say "we" because I had the same experience. We finish with our sport, enter the corporate world and for the first 1-3 years we suck! I might lose a lot of friends here, but I'm going to blame the employer mostly and the athlete a little. We suck not because of a lack of drive, motivation, grit, desire, hustle, work ethic, determination, commitment and discipline. In fact we're world class in this, that's why we became elite athletes! We simply suck because there's a massive lack of on-boarding and training. In my first couple of sales jobs post sport, I had 1 day of training and I was thrown in the fire on day 2, without any training ever again. I sucked! Got fired fast! In my 3rd sales job, we had 12 weeks of training, a buddy system, and continues L&D. I became a top performer in 8 months. What would've happened if that 1st company I worked for had the same L&D, on-boarding and training? Maybe I would've made them a lot of money...? That's my fault for not delving deeper into the company's on-boarding and training and that's also their fault for hiring me knowing damn well they have no time for training people. Athletes have elite high performing habits but they're not miracle makers and they don't read minds. They need to learn this new thing they're doing. So if you're a business with professional onboarding, training and L&D programs, you might find massive value from having athletes on your teams, in which case I'd love to help :) If you don't have time to train people then don't hire athletes who have just transitioned from their sport, you're setting them up for failure! The lifespan of 98% of athletes: Age 13-21: I'm going to work hard to eventually compete at the highest level possible in my sport (NBA, MLB, NFL, NRL, AFL, Olympics etc etc) Age 21-24: I didn't make the top level, but I'm going to keep trying. In the meantime I'll keep playing at these lower levels, get paid a little and maybe do some part time studying or a part time job. Age 24-30: Still didn't make the top level, but I am getting paid a little so I'll keep playing because I enjoy it and it's all I know and there's a slither of hope I might still make it. In the meantime, I'll just get by in my full time or part time job. OR I'm 24, I didn't make it. Wow, I learned a lot. What a journey! Time to move on and chase another dream. OK, I'll keep playing semi pro or a little in the meantime for fun, and fully focus on a post-sport career as my #1 priority. The fact is, most athletes come to this crossroads at around age 24-26. I made that decision to move on from basketball at 26. It was tough, but my goodness was it one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you're an athlete chasing your sporting dreams and haven't "made it" by 24-26, might be best to move on and focus on something else. As each year you compete going forward the less likely you'll "make it" and you're quickly falling behind in any other career. I get it, it's fun! You travel the world getting paid (a little) to play the game/sport you love. You can probably do it until you're 40 (if healthy). But at some point, you have to grow up, learn to enjoy/have fun in other ways and grow a serious career. Do it sooner rather than later! Going into college @stephencurry30 was overlooked by almost every scout. 20 years later he became maybe the top 5 greatest players of all time and soon a billionaire! The new Stephen Curry documentary Underrated tells his story and it’s simply fire π₯ Here is a quote from his college coach who discovered Steph in high school: Coach Bob McKillop and his assistant Matt Matheny drove to Charlotte Christian School simply to watch Curry play. “We watched. We saw. We liked. It was interesting. Because he missed shots. He made turnovers. He made bad plays, but he never stopped playing,” McKillop recalled. “The next opportunity he had, he made spectacular plays. He showed a real emotional toughness, which is so rare.” Steph was overlooked by almost every scout. 20 years later he became one of the greatest of all time. Mainly thanks to Coach Bob McKillop who recognised Steph’s attitude, didn’t care too much about the resume and invested his time in coaching & mentoring that attitude! Athlete: 2 years ago when you approached me about a career in recruitment I had no idea this existed. But…wow I’m loving it! Me: You happy?
